Loyalty and filial piety are traditional Chinese virtues and the foundation of self-cultivation and family management. In the Taiping Jing (The Scripture of Great Peace), it is said, “Among all things in the world, filial piety ranks first” and “What Heaven and Earth and the sages and the wise should strive for and achieve greatly is that longevity and filial piety are of utmost urgency.” Mentioning longevity, which Taoism values most, together with filial piety, shows its significance.
Here is a small story to share with you:
The Taoist school, which originated in the Spring and Autumn Period, had a founder named Lao Laizi. According to the Records of the Grand Historian: Biographies of Laozi, “Lao Laizi was also from the State of Chu. He wrote fifteen essays, expounding the application of Taoism, and he was a contemporary of Confucius.” He was extremely filial and considerate to his parents and often tried every means to amuse them. To make his parents happy, he specially raised several beautiful little birds for them to play with. The birds sang very beautifully, and his father was delighted to hear them, always saying with a smile, “The chirping of the little birds is really pleasant!” So he often took the initiative to逗引the birds to make sweet sounds. Lao Laizi was very happy to see the smiles on his parents’ faces. When Lao Laizi was over seventy years old, once, his parents looked at his gray hair and sighed, “Even our son is so old. It seems that our lifespan is not long either.” Afraid that his parents would worry, Lao Laizi specially made a set of colorful clothes. When walking, he danced and was very cheerful, pretending to be dancing, and tried every means to make his parents happy, and indeed his parents seemed very happy. One day, he was bringing a bowl of porridge to his parents in the hall and accidentally fell down. Afraid that his parents would be sad, he deliberately pretended to cry like a baby and rolled on the ground. His parents really thought he had fallen and rolled on purpose. Seeing that he kept rolling and didn’t get up, they said with a smile, “Lao Laizi is really funny. Get up quickly.” Lao Laizi was renowned for his “filial piety” and “seclusion.” As a thinker in the late Spring and Autumn Period, contemporary with Confucius, by “expounding the application of Taoism,” he laid the philosophical foundation of China’s view of celestial ethics, and also had a profound impact on the development of Chinese philosophical thoughts.?
